Creative Keyboardist (Portland Piano Lab)
Studio Policy

Music is an art, and learning an art takes time and disciplined effort. This policy helps you achieve your goals.

Tuition & Fees

  • Tuition is invoiced and due monthly based on the number of regularly scheduled lessons.
  • Continuous study is expected, excepting vacations and major holidays (the studio will typically be closed for the latter). No payment is due for vacations and major holidays, but is otherwise due for all regularly-scheduled lessons even if you must miss a lesson for any reason, including work-related travel. If you anticipate taking frequent unpaid absences you’re probably better off with a different teacher.
  • Tuition credit or refunds are not given for missed lessons. You may schedule a make-up lesson, however (see below).
  • If the teacher must cancel a lesson for any reason, the lesson will be credited to the following month.
  • Overpayment of tuition will be credited to the following month.
  • If you discontinue lessons, tuition paid is non-refundable. Any remaining scheduled lessons, scheduled make-up lessons and lesson and make-up credits will be cancelled and no refunds or credits provided. If you discontinue lessons before tuition has been paid, but you’ve taken one or more lessons, tuition as invoiced for the entire month remains payable.
  • The curriculum fee paid when starting lessons is non-refundable.
  • Tuition rates may occasionally change.

Cancellations & Make-Ups

  • The current cancellation and make-up policies are viewable when cancelling a lesson via the Student Portal.
  • A lesson may be cancelled for any reason. If you cancel before the deadline and receive a make-up credit, you may (but aren’t required to) schedule a make-up lesson.
  • Lessons must be cancelled, and make-up lessons scheduled, via the Student Portal.
  • Availability of make-up lessons that match your schedule isn’t guaranteed.
  • Cancellation and make-up policies may occasionally change.

Health

  • Attend lessons in person only if fully Covid-vaccinated.
  • Masks aren’t required, though you may wear one.
  • If you’re not feeling well but are well enough to take your lesson, please take your lesson virtually.

Other

  • Lessons may be virtual-only as necessitated by fire/smoke season, winter storms, health-related events, or if teacher takes a “working trip.”
  • Always bring to in-person lessons your music books, printed copies of all current music and exercises, and a device to view online materials as needed.
  • Silence your phone and don’t call/text during lessons.
  • Practice regularly for the minimum daily practice time we discuss.
  • If you’ve had inadequate practice time, attend your lesson anyway. (I may ask you to practice on your own for part of the lesson.)
  • Email (hanvey@gmail.com) is preferred for communication between lessons.
