Brahms was expected by many to continue Beethoven’s legacy, and his First Symphony, from which this theme comes, was called “Beethoven’s Tenth.” When it was observed that the symphony did in fact have certain melodic resemblances to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Brahms said, “any ass can see that!”

The diagonal lines in measures 2-4 show how the melody moves from one hand to the other. Additional occurrences aren’t indicated by lines but should be easy to identify.
