Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” wrote over 100 ragtime pieces, a ballet, and two operas.

Joplin’s waltz Bethena uses the characteristically intricate rhythms of his better-known pieces Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer.

In 1976, Joplin, finally recognized as an extremely influential composer upon American popular music, was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize.
